APPLY NOW

There are five actionable components for schools wishing to partner with New College for this program.

  1. Nominate and award the prize to an eligible student as part of your school’s annual awards night.
  2. Promote New College scholarship application closing dates to your Year 12 students, including in your school newsletter.
  3. Share a promotional code with your Year 12 students enabling them to apply to New College without having to pay the $50 application fee.
  4. Enable a senior member of the New College staff, and where possible a graduate of your school who now lives at New College, to visit your school and give an annual 30-40 minute presentation and Q&A with information about New College and other university residential colleges in our network.
  5. Send out an email/notification from your school on behalf of New College, inviting parents to meet with a senior member of the New College staff as they visit your local area, once annually.

How would the school go about awarding the prize and scholarship?
Your school would nominate one student to receive the New College, UNSW Pathway to University Access Prize valued at $100.

The principal of your school would be responsible for nominating the student or delegating this responsibility to another staff member. The criteria for the prize is as follows:

  1. a student who has ranked very highly within their school during the HSC based on their school marks; and
  2. has displayed exemplary leadership skills and maturity, and
  3. has given service within their school or wider community; and
  4. has an interest in attending The University of New South Wales and could credibly be offered a place to study a Bachelor degree program.

If enrolment of UNSW and Membership of New College does not eventuate, the successful prize winner will still retain the $100 prize. However, in this situation the subsequent $1,500 scholarship will not be awarded to them.

If the school deems there is not a suitable candidate in a given year, we ask that the school refrains from offering the prize in that year.

The prize would be ideally presented and highlighted as part of your school’s annual awards night. A member of the New College alumni residing in your local area may present the prize, subject to their availability and circumstances.

Winners of a New College, UNSW Pathway to University Access Prize are also eligible to receive a $1,500 Pathway Access Scholarship towards accommodation within New College at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Eligibility for this scholarship is based on:

  1. successful entry to an undergraduate course at The University of New South Wales: and
  2. successful application and confirmation of membership to New College, UNSW.

The scholarship is non-deferable, so must be redeemed in the year following completion of High School.

The $1,500 scholarship will be disbursed to the student as a simple deduction in fees at the point of invoice but after a membership contract is signed and a deposit and bond have been paid. This has the overall effect of reducing the student’s annual accommodation and catering fees by $1,500.

  2. The applicant will first need to create an account to use the New College Student Portal.
  3. Once they have created their account, they will be able to complete an online application.
  4. Where the application asks for payment of the application fee, use the promotional code:  STAY2024, and the $50 application fee will not be charged.
  5. Once the application has been successfully submitted, the New College Admissions Officer will contact your student to invite them to be interviewed by the Dean Of residents.
  6. A successful application and interview will result in your student being offered Membership to New College.

When would a senior New College staff member of staff, and possibly graduates of our school, visit to give a 30–40-minute presentation and Q&A with information about New College and other university residential colleges in our network? What other colleges are included in the presentation?
Many of the NSW school visits take place in school term 2 and 3, with the majority of these visits scheduled in May each year. These presentations are generally given by the Dean of Residents or the Assistant Dean of New College. If this is not possible, a suitable alternate representative will be available. In special circumstances the Master/CEO of the College also visits schools to give presentations.

The other accommodation providers in the Living At University collective are  Robert Menzies College and Morling Residential College (Macquarie University), St Martins College (Charles Sturt University), Arundel House and St Barnabas Terraces (located near the University of Sydney), New College Postgraduate Village (which New College also operates at the University of New South Wales) and Flo Harris Lodge, located in Petersham. Please note that the Pathway To University Access Program is unique to New College (undergraduate) but may be transferable to these other accommodation providers in some instances.

How will the meeting between parents and a senior member of the New College staff work?
These meetings typically take place at a local café, library, or church. Parents often help to support their children through college. Parents are highly invested in ensuring that their children will receive appropriate pastoral and academic support, in a safe environment, and one where they will hopefully have fun and make life-long friends. While parents may bring their children, we discourage students from attending these meetings alone, and no student under the age of 18 should attend unless accompanied by a parent/carer. The Dean, or another member of staff, will give parents/carers an overview of college life, and will happily answer any questions they may have.
