New College

New College has a full and exciting social calendar to help you get the most out of your university experience. Activities range from informal and spontaneous fun – Frisbee on the oval or a game of cards in a Resident Adviser’s flat - to more organised events such as barbeques, ski trips and the College Ball. Each week features both a whole College supper and a smaller group supper evening. The elected Social Directors and sub-committees of the New College Students’ Association coordinate these activities. No matter what you love to do, there is something on the New College social calendar for you.

O’Week

The College year kicks off with O’Week, jam-packed with activities, sport, and social events. You can look forward to:

The New College Students' Association (NCSA) represents the student body at New College. It seeks to promote community and encourage residents’ active participation in university and College life. Each year, students elect a leadership team, known as the NCSA Executive, to run the Association and coordinate activities.

Part of the Executive's responsibility is to oversee the development of different social sub-committees, including:

  • SurfSoc - collegians are able to book the College bus for early morning surfing at nearby beaches
  • EarthSoc - promoting environmental awareness and action in College and the wider society
  • NerdSoc - for all things video gaming
  • PicSoc - responsible for all the photos of resident life used for record keeping, social media and the College Magazine

New College Postgraduate Village (NCPV)

NCPV has a vibrant and eclectic social life, reflecting the diverse range of people of over 40 different nationalities who call NCPV home. Each floor gathers weekly for supper, and this is the best place to catch up with other residents and find out what is going on in the community. About once a month the entire student body gathers for supper in the Main Common Room and ground floor courtyards. NCPV also runs BBQs throughout the year for all residents.

O’Week

At the start of every year, new and old NCPV residents spend a week meeting each other, enjoying activities, and getting to know Sydney. O’Week usually starts with some ice breaker events. The program varies from year to year with typical events including:

  • Karaoke
  • Wine and cheese evening

Formal Dinners

The New College Communities gather several times a year for Formal Dinners. These evenings are great opportunities to dress up, enjoy a three-course meal, appreciate the musical talents of fellow residents, and hear from an eminent speaker. These special guests are always distinguished leaders in society, whether university academics, politicians, sporting heroes, contributors to the arts, or successful alumni.

Recent speakers have included Stan Grant, journalist and television presenter; Thomas Keneally AO, renowned Australian author; The Hon Gladys Berejiklian, the current Premier of NSW; Scientia Professor Michelle Simmons, accomplished Australian physicist; and Dr Terry Percival, one of the developers of Wi-Fi.

New College holds a Fresher Formal Dinner at the start of the year to welcome its new residents, and finishes the year with a Valedictory Dinner to farewell departing students and celebrate the achievements of the year. NCPV finishes the year with a Cocktail Night where residents are acknowledged for their contributions to the College community.
