Welcome

from the Master & Chief Executive Officer Professor Trevor H. Cairney BA, MLitt, PhD

Welcome to New College, at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. New College is one of Australia's finest independent residential colleges.  It is committed to providing a stimulating environment in which outstanding young men and women can grow intellectually, socially and spiritually.

New College is a special place, due to the many special people who are proud to call themselves New Collegians. Research in the social sciences is littered with significant findings that show how one person can make a difference to your life: a teacher, a parent or caregiver, a mentor, a coach, a close friend, a youth group leader.  Our aim within the College is to build a community whose members have positive influences on each other’s lives.  The New College community provides a network of relationships enabling connectedness and a sense of belonging. The academic support and pastoral care systems reflect the fact that welfare and growth of students is at the core of College life. We contribute to each other.

New College was founded based on the Oxbridge model of college life and collegiality, and attempts to develop the whole person.  While New College UNSW is a much younger institution than the first New College at Oxford (established in 1379) it shares many of the characteristics of collegial life present in the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge.  However, life at New is more egalitarian than many older institutions while still providing the same richness of academic, cultural and social life.  Imagine a community where you are surrounded by people who are passionate about their academic study, making the most of their time at university and making a difference in the world around them. Bring together 250 such people and you have an idea of what type of dynamic community exists at New College.

Why not join this most remarkable of communities and make your contribution to the lives of others.

Mission

New College’s mission is to bring about collegiality, academic excellence and service to society, founded upon Christian faith and values.

Purposes

Residential Care

Care and support of residents is at the core of New College's purposes. The College has a residential leadership team that works with the Master to care for all aspects of residential life, including physical, social, psychological, academic and spiritual needs. The pastoral care of residents within the building is led by the Dean of Residents who lives in the building with his family. The College also has a team of Residential Advisers who are located within specific groups and who are responsible for the welfare of their group of residents.

Seven Residential Advisers (RAs) are appointed each year to care for residents in their section of the building; they work with the Senior Residential Adviser to care for the residents. The RAs take it in turns to be on duty night and day 7 days per week. They also provide practical help for residents and active support when needed. Our RAs have a particular role to ensure that all new residents settle in well to life in the college community.  Find out more about Resident Advisers»

Academic Support & Success

At New College, academic achievement is at the core of the College’s purposes. The Master and Dean both hold doctoral degrees and are involved in research scholarship. The Master is a visiting Professor within the School of Education and continues to supervise postgraduate students and conduct research in language and literacy development, educational pedagogy and higher education.  The Dean works with other researchers in the fields of mathematics education and teacher recruitment.
