The most significant renovations and refurbishments to be carried out on the original New College building in its 42 year history took place over the 2011/2012 Summer break. The renovations included refurbishments of all rooms and common rooms on floors one to three. Each room was fitted out with new cupboards, shelving, desks, carpet, heating, painting and lighting. Large, new common rooms were fitted out on floors 1-3, including a new kitchenette for each. Other aspects of the renovations included a new games room, lounge room, a roof over the internal courtyard, a new kitchen for use by residents, five new apartments for visiting-fellows, parents and other casual guests, a new stairway from the courtyard to the ground floor and other alterations to comply with Fire and Disabled Access regulations.
The College has a number of excellent communal areas that facilitate interaction between residents. One is the Main Common Room – used as a large lounge area, meeting room and theatre for revues, plays, musicals and other productions.
The dining room is the location for cafeteria dining 7 days a week and is used for formal dinners that are an important part of community life. New College is a 'dry' college, with residents not permitted to keep alcohol in the building.
Residents are accommodated within a group of eight or nine rooms. The bathrooms for each group are single sex, containing private facilities. A laundry with washing machines and driers is located on each floor.
Each room is equipped with lamp, single bed, desk, chair, bookshelves and a built-in wardrobe. College rooms are also equipped with a phone, heating and a data link to provide broadband internet access. A wireless network is also accessible in many parts of the college.
New College residents regularly participate in different sports on a social and competitive level. The many sports on offer include aussie rules football, rugby, tennis, netball, basketball, touch football, soccer, hockey, cricket, table tennis and martial arts.
The New College games room is a popular area for residents to relax, catch up with friends and play some games. Included in this room are facilities to play a game of pool, table tennis, foosball, air hockey or card games. Next to the games room is a brand new Television Room with Foxtel.
There are a number of facilities and resources in the college to support residents in their studies including a resources room containing personal computers, printers, a scanner and photocopier for resident use. Residents are able to print to the resource room from their rooms through the in-house network.
Academic support is integral to College life. The team of academic tutors provide support in different subject areas and offer tutoring in study skills and exam preparation. The College backs onto the Village Green on lower campus which is a large sports and activities area with Sports Association Facilities nearby.
