Courtyard & Balconies
The living areas of New College wrap around a large central courtyard. Residents’ rooms are located on four floors above the ground floor. The four floors are set in a rectangular orientation around the central courtyard, which sits above the ground floor. The courtyard is used for many and varied activities and is covered by a glass and polycarbonate roof that allows sunlight in but keeps the rain out, making it suitable for use in all weather. As an outdoor eating area the courtyard is often used by residents for BBQ’s, pancake breakfasts, morning teas and after-dinner suppers. Residents are also allowed to take their regular meals upstairs to this courtyard from the ground-floor cafeteria. Often the courtyard is used as a place for residents to study or just to hang out.
The living areas on Floors 2-4 are accessed from balconies that wrap all the way above and around the exterior of the courtyard. The unique shape of the building makes it easy for residents to get to know one another as everyone who leaves their room, to exit or reach another part of the college, walks through the balconies and courtyard passing other residents. A bridge spans across the courtyard at the level of the 3rd Floor and provides another space to study or relax.
The games room and television room are both located in the courtyard.
