Competitive & Social Sports

New College residents regularly participate in a number of different sports on a social level ranging from pool, darts, table tennis, cricket, soccer and hockey. On occasion, the sports directors will organise a friendly tournament between New Collegians.

Collegians also take part in more formal organised sports competitions.  This includes New College representatives taking part in East Coast Games & Australian University Games.  Sports include Touch Football, Netball, Rugby, Basketball, Hockey, Cricket, Soccer, Taekwondo and other Martial Arts, Aussies Rules and various other sports.  Central to each year’s calendar is the Inter-College sporting competitions.

College Sports

Residents at New College are involved in a wide range of sporting competitions. Every week there are different sporting competitions that are run as part of the Inter-College sporting competition. About twenty different sports are played between the different Colleges at UNSW including rugby, soccer, basketball, hockey and netball. Each of these sports are played by both men and women in the College where the emphasis is on giving every member of the College a chance to participate in the sporting side of College life.

Residents also join university sporting teams that play against local sporting clubs and other universities at the University Games.

As well as the Inter-College sporting competitions and representation on UNSW sporting teams, residents are also involved in social sporting competitions such as touch football, badminton,  basketball, indoor soccer and indoor netball competitions. There are a wide range of sporting activities for residents to be involved in and always scope for residents to take part in many different sporting activities.

University Clubs & Facilities

UNSW has over fifty sporting clubs that field teams in different divisions making it possible for people of different ability levels to get involved. UNSW has produced many international sportspeople, several of whom have also been residents at New College such as the current coach of the NSW Waratahs Ewen Mackenzie and Australian women’s cricketer Alex Blackwell.

Living on the doorstep of the University provides immediate access to all of the University sporting facilities, including the Gymnasium, pool, squash courts, real tennis, badminton, tennis courts and sports fields.  Visit the University Sports Association web site»
