Social life

∆ Social Life - the College ball is an annual event
∆ 2006 Freshers' Formal dinner

New College has an exciting and full roster of social activities to help you get the most out of your university experience. Activities range from spontaneous games of touch football on the Village Green or coffee in one of the group common rooms, to more organised events coordinated by the New College Students’ Association such as barbecues at the beach, ski trips, performance nights, trivia games and the annual New College Ball.  New College residents also produce an annual Play and a Revue in the best university tradition to reflect on university life in a humorous way.

The social life at College ranges from informal and often spontaneous activities such as Frisbee on the Village Green or a game of 500 over coffee in one of the Room Group common rooms, to more organised events such as barbeques at the beach, ski trips, play (staged in May/June), the Revue (in late August), and the College Ball. Many of these activities are co-ordinated by the elected social directors and are advertised widely in College.

Central to fostering relationships, connectedness and a sense of belonging is the unique College room groups’ structure.  The bedrooms are grouped in 8-9 bedrooms which are around a common room with kitchenette, tables and chairs.  These common rooms enable residents to socialise together in their room groups by mingling in their common rooms having tea/coffee and chatting.

Formal events

The College also provides opportunities for special occasions at which distinguished external speakers or former Collegians join us. These are of 2 major kinds:

  • Master's dinners are held on a monthly basis and provide an opportunity for 15-20 Collegians to share a meal with a guest speaker.
  • Formal dinners are organised by the College on 7-8 occasions per year (Collegians are required to attend all dinners) and allow Collegians to share a formal meal and listen to a guest speaker.

Students have their own representative organisation called the NCSA to meet the team click here, who together with the college management organise various activities throughout the year.

Most Collegians remember O-Week as one of the highlights of their College Days. Each year in November current Collegians elect an O-Week committee that takes responsibility for the induction and welcome of the following year's freshers (i.e. new ‘New Collegians’). Residents at New College design a full program to give freshers as many opportunities as possible to get to know other members of the New College community. Activities like the annual Public Transport Rally, Harbour Cruise and other challenges are punctuated by information sessions taken by the residents, staff and administration. The University also runs information activities, library tours and welcome functions for faculties and schools.
