Stuart Barton Babbage Fellowship launched at New College

Over 50 people gathered recently at New College to acknowledge the Rev Dr Canon Stuart Barton Babbage, AM, at the launch of a new award named in his honour. The Stuart Barton Babbage Fellowship has been created by New College to support the scholarship of an outstanding man or woman who is pursuing doctoral studies or post-doctoral research at UNSW.

Dr Babbage is one of the great figures of Australian Church life. He was the second Master of New College, from 1973-1983. He is also a former Principal of Ridley Theological College in Melbourne and St Andrew’s in Sydney. He is also a former head of the Australian College of Theology in Sydney.

Dr Babbage introduced eminent speakers at New College Formal Dinners, where a who’s who of campus and society attended to share their views with students. He strengthened the College’s ongoing work in academic Christian scholarship and apologetics by holding regular ‘Forum’ dinners for senior Christian academics that provided an opportunity for serious wrestling with contemporary issues.

The Fellowship will be New College’s newest academic scholarship and will support the growth and development of a promising scholar doing significant doctoral or post graduate research. The award will be given to the successful applicant by the Master in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor in March 2006.

This Fellowship will be integral to the College’s ongoing mission to promote academic excellence, collegiality and service to society. For more information about the Scholarship click here.
