As Semester 1 of 2016 began, New College welcomed 109 1st year residents in an Orientation Week celebration that saw many highlights. From the 21st-28th February, a committee of returning residents organised a series of social events and fun activities to welcome “freshers” to the New College family and help them make new friends and adjust to life at UNSW.
On Sunday, an official welcome lunch was hosted with invitations extended to the parents and guardians of freshers along with returning residents, RA’s, New College Dean, Bill Pierson and New College Master, Trevor Cairney. Following farewells, new residents revelled in live music as they donned their flannies and learned to barn dance the night away.
Tuesday saw freshers introduced to their tutors who will provide academic support throughout their year of residency at New College, and to the NCCF for 2016 including Hayley (Carlos) Morris, Kaspar (Porridge) Fiebig, Emily (Swizzle) Drown and Matthew (Norbert) Dunn.
The fun continued throughout the week with a jet boating adventure on Sydney harbour and relaxing afternoon in Manly on Wednesday before the formal dinner later that evening. The dinner featured a beautiful performance from talented new residents Sophie and Caitlan Baxter, of Newcastle, on the cello and violin.
Other highlights from the week included the NCCF trivia night, Harbour Cruise, public transport rally and New College having their excellent dancing skills featured on Sunrise.
This year’s incredible program was organised by a dedicated team of returning residents or “O-Week Leaders” including:
- Michaela (Razzle) Padayachee
- Adam (Racecar) Hudson
- Martjie (Bindi) Venter
- Jamie (Mankey) McColl
- Laura (Clouds) Heydon
- Sam (Dr Zeus) Thompson
Thank you to all those involved in creating such a memorable first week for freshers.
