Admissions FAQs
Q1 |
How do I apply for membership of New College?
If necessary, for technical reasons, applications can also be made by downloading the main application document and the two referee documents, then emailing all three forms and a digital photo to admissions@newcollege.unsw.edu.au. |
Q2 |
Who should I ask to be my referees? We require two references: (i) Academic reference: from a senior person in your School, Course or University, and (ii) Personal reference: from a person who has known you for some time, e.g. family friend, doctor, sports coach, club official, etc. References should be returned separately to the College, but it is your responsibility to ensure that the references have been sent. We are not able to pursue referees. |
Q3 |
The Application Portal has crashed partway through my application. What should I do?Please contact our Admissions Officer for more information about what do in this case. You may contact them using email (admissions@newcollege.unsw.edu.au) or by calling (+61 2 93811999). |
Q4 |
How long will it take to process my application?Once we receive your application, personal reference, academic reference and application fee, you should be contacted within 2 weeks to arrange an interview with the Dean. |
Q5 |
Is there a closing date for applications? There is no official closing date but it is wise to have completed your application by no later than mid-November. Applications for admission are received from August each year for the following year. We receive over 400 applications for approx. 80 places, and the bulk of interviews are conducted by mid-December. |
Q6 |
Are all applicants interviewed? We attempt to interview all applicants. However, a number who live inter-State or overseas are assessed by application, references and with a phone interview. The interview can be an important opportunity not only to meet Collegians, but also to see the facilities in the College. |
Q7 |
What should I bring to the interview, if invited? You do not need to bring anything else with you, unless there is something in particular you would like us to note or see. It is you we want to meet. |
Q8 |
Who conducts the interview? The Dean of Residents conducts most interviews, although the Master will also interview when there are many applicants to see during the period of UNSW Co-op and Rural Engineering scholarship interviews. The interview normally takes around 15-20 minutes, and there is opportunity to see the College if you have not already done so. |
Q9 |
When will I know if my application has been successful? This will depend on when your interview takes place. First-round offers are generally not made until closer to the end of the calendar year. Second-round offers are generally made after the release of the UAC offers in January. Offers may be made at other times depending on circumstances. If you require an answer by a certain date, contact the Dean and we will try to get a response to you before then. |
Q10 |
What are the criteria for College membership? There are a number of factors that are considered. These include academic performance, school/community service, leadership positions, awards, activities in sport/music/art, and special needs of various kinds. Overall, we try to assess how an applicant will contribute to and be involved in the College community. We also like to have a mix of faculties and courses represented, as well as a mix of places of origin. The College also seeks to serve particular UNSW programs, such as the Co-op program, Rural Entry programs, the Aboriginal Education Program, and the Access Scheme. |
Q11 |
Am I told where I am on the waiting list? There is not a strict order of priority with the waiting list. Different people have different needs and circumstances, and consideration is always given to these in offering interviews or places from the waiting list. There is always the possibility of being offered a place in College right up until the start of O'Week or the commencement of Session 1. However, you should pursue other options if you are on the waiting list, in case you are not able to get a place in New College. The Dean will always try to give you an honest understanding of your chances of being made an offer at any given point. |
Q12 |
What happens if I am made an offer? If you receive an offer, you will be emailed the necessary documentation for accepting your offer, and be asked to pay a $2,500 deposit. This consists of a $1,500 bond and a holding deposit of $1000, which will be credited against your first semester fees. There may also be additional charges, such as O Week fee, NCSA membership fee and Unigym charge to be covered before arrival at New College. |
Q13 |
Are there College Scholarships and Bursaries?Yes, see Scholarships and Bursaries. |
Q14 |
If I accept the offer of College membership, and pay the deposit, what happens if I don't come to UNSW?If for any reason you do not come to UNSW, your deposit (bond and holding deposit) will be refunded. If, however, you do come to UNSW but decide to live elsewhere, we can hold your deposit or charge you an administration fee. |
Q15 |
Can I defer a place in College if I defer my University place? In most cases, yes. This is not guaranteed, however, and does not usually apply for late offers or offers made in the middle of the year. |
