Community Involvement

∆ New Collegians making a difference in Cambodia

New College is more than just a place to study and live:

  • In 2004, 2005 and 2006 our residents travelled overseas to build houses for underprivileged people in Cambodia, Fiji and the Philippines
  • In 2007 College residents will commence a partnership with the Kintore indigenous community in the remote Northern Territory, working with the children in the area as part of a school vacation care program.
  • Residents take part in the volunteer Shack tutoring program for local disadvantaged high school students and in one year ‘New’ provided over 40% of UNSW tutors.
  • Residents regularly carry out fundraising for and donate to various charities such as Oxfam, World Vision, and UNICEF. In recent years residents have also attended Villawood detention centre to meet with and provide encouragement and support to people waiting to have their asylum claims processed by the Australian government.

Community Service

The College residents play an active part in serving and giving to society at large through a range of community service endeavours.  A key example of this is the annual Habitat For Humanity Global Village team trips which go in the Uni mid year break to build houses for people living in the developing world.

Social Service

Our residents volunteer as tutors in the Shack Tutoring program as well as helping out at Theresa house – a service for homeless people. Other residents have been involved in the Bread of Life ministry of St Michael’s church in Surry Hills that provides food for people in need who live in Surry Hills.  They also participate in numerous university clubs and society boards, councils and committees providing volunteer leadership and carrying out various responsibilities.

Charitable Fundraising

Collegians also support fundraising activities organised by World Vision, MS Society, Habitat for Humanity, Indigenous projects, UNHCR UNICEF and Oxfam as well as many others.
