New College Sporting prowess and success
2008 has been arguably the most successful year of New College sport in over a decade. It’s great to see New College sport going so well. Last Thursday (22 May) New College’s rugby team won the inter-college shield for the first time since 1996. The win in 1996 was the last in a four-year winning streak. Almost half the College community turned up to see this magnificent bit of history occur. In other wins New College’s men’s touch football team won the flag in their inter-college competition, with New’s women’s team coming in as runners up. The women and men’s netball team both showed incredible form and took out their respective competitions. The hockey teams are competing for the premiership on Friday night. People have been impressed by the good spirit evident in inter-college sport this year. The New College involvement reflects on the individuals as well as the team leaders and our wonderful sports directors – Scotty and Pauline.

2008 New College Play
The 2008 New College Play was Cosi by Australian author Louis Nowra. The plot of Cosi revolves around a university graduate directing an opera by Mozart, Cosi fan Tutte, with the actors being patients in a mental institution in Melbourne. The play last week was a great reminder of the richness of College life – then amazing acting talent on stage over three nights accompanied by an ensemble of talented musicians who managed to add a unique element to the production as a whole, not to mention the complete ensemble cast, technical crew, back stage, stage management, production design and front of house duties. New College says thank you to the directors Roger Merzian and Kate Chiofalo and the producers Sarah Eglinton and Chao Qiao who along with Richard Tierney (Music Director), managed to bring together a great production. In all there were in excess of 120 Collegians involved. Congratulations to all involved in the Play.
New College Annual Appeal
As announced in the last newsletter we are in the final stages of planning and preparing the 2008 annual giving Appeal to raise funds to the benefit of the College’s advancement. This will be posted out to Alumni members and friends before the end of the financial year. So look out for this in the next few weeks and consider if you can contribute to supporting this great institution.
