Whom should I ask to be my referees?
We require two references: (i) from a senior person in your School, Course or University, and (ii) from a person who has known you for some time, e.g. family friend, doctor, sports coach, club official, etc. References should be returned separately to the College, but it is your responsibility to ensure that the references have been sent. We are not able to pursue referees.
How long will it take to process my application?
Once we receive your application, personal reference, academic reference and application fee, you should be contacted within 2 weeks to arrange an interview with the Dean.
Is there a closing date for applications?
There is no official closing date but it is wise to apply by no later then November. Applications for admission are received from August each year. We receive over 400 applications for approx. 80 places, and the bulk of interviews are conducted by mid-December.
Are all applicants interviewed?
We attempt to interview all applicants. However, a number who live inter-State or overseas are assessed by application, references and with a phone interview. The interview can be an important opportunity not only to meet Collegians, but also to see the facilities in the College.
What should I bring to the interview, if invited?
You do not need to bring anything else with you, unless there is something in particular you would like us to note or see.
Who conducts the interview?
The Dean of Residents conducts most interviews, although the Master will also interview when there are many applicants to see during the period of UNSW Co-op and Rural Engineering scholarship interviews. The interview takes 20 minutes (approx.), and there is opportunity to see the College if you have not already done so.
When will I know if my application has been successful?
After your interview, the Dean will be in contact with you to let you know the outcome. This normally takes up to 2 weeks after the interview.
What are the criteria for College membership?
There are a number of factors that are considered. These include academic performance, school/community service, leadership positions, awards, activities in sport/music/art, and special needs of various kinds. Overall, we try to assess how an applicant will contribute to and be involved in the College community. We also like to have a mix of faculties and courses represented, as well as a mix of places of origin. The College also seeks to serve particular UNSW programs, such as the Co-op program, Rural Entry programs, the Aboriginal Education Program, and the Access Scheme.
Am I told where I am on the waiting list?
There is not a strict order of priority with the waiting list. Different people have different needs and circumstances, and consideration is always given to these in offering interviews or places from the waiting list. There is always the possibility of being offered a place in College right up until the start of O'Week or the commencement of Session 1. However, you should pursue other options if you are on the waiting list, in case you cannot get a place in New College.
Are there College Scholarships and Busaries?
Yes, see Scholarships and Busaries»
If I accept the offer of College membership, and pay the deposit, what happens if I don't come to UNSW?
If for any reason you do not come to UNSW, your deposit will be refunded. We can, however, hold your deposit if you do come to UNSW, but decide to live elsewhere.
Can I defer a place in College if I defer my University place?
In most cases, yes.
