Further questions can be emailed to our receptionist at admissions@newcollege.unsw.edu.au or faxed to 9381 1909 or mailed to New College, UNSW, Anzac Pde., Kensington, NSW 2052.

"How do I apply for membership of New College?"
An application package, containing application form, reference forms, and information, is available from the College office which can be contacted by phone (02 9381 1999) or email (admissions@newcollege.unsw.edu.au). The application form is also available on the College's web page.

"Whom should I ask to be my referees?"
We require two references: (i) from a senior person in your School, Course or University, and (ii) from a person who has known you for some time, e.g. family friend, doctor, sports coach, club official, etc. References should be returned separately to the College, but it is your responsibility to ensure that the references have been sent. We are not able to pursue referees.

"Is there a closing date for applications?"
There is no official closing date, but it is wise to apply by late November. We receive over 400 applications for approx. 80 places, and the bulk of interviews are conducted by mid-December.

"Are all applicants interviewed?"
We attempt to interview all applicants. However, a number who live inter-State or overseas are assessed by application, references and with a phone interview. The interview can be an important opportunity not only to meet Collegians, but also to see the facilities in the College.

"What should I bring to the interview, if invited?"
You do not need to bring anything else with you, unless there is something in particular you would like us to note or see. Your application and references are sufficient.

"Who conducts the interview?"
The Dean conducts most interviews, though the Master will also interview when there are many applicants to see during the period of UNSW Co-op and Rural Engineering scholarship interviews. The interview takes approx. 20 minutes, and there is opportunity to see the College if you have not already done so.

"What are the criteria for College membership?"
There are a number of factors that are considered. These include academic performance, school/community service, leadership positions, awards, activities in sport/music/art, and special needs of various kinds. Overall, we try to assess how an applicant will contribute to and be involved in the College community. We also like to have a mix of faculties and courses represented, as well as a mix of places of origin. The College also seeks to serve particular UNSW programs, such as the Co-op program, Rural Entry programs, the Aboriginal Education Program, and the Access Scheme.

"Am I told where I am on the waiting list?"
There is not a strict order of priority with the waiting list. Different people have different needs and circumstances, and consideration is always given to these in offering interviews or places from the waiting list. There is always the possibility of being offered a place in College right up until the start of O'Week or the first Session. However, you should pursue other options if you are on the waiting list, in case you cannot get a place in New College.

"Are there College scholarships?"
In association with the UNSW Access Scheme, we offer a half-fees residential scholarship. You need to apply to the Access office to be considered for this scholarship. There is also a limited amount of bursary assistance available.

"If I accept the offer of College membership, and pay the deposit, what happens if I don't come to UNSW?"
If for any reason you do not come to UNSW, your deposit will be refunded. We can, however, hold your deposit if you do come to UNSW, but decide to live elsewhere.

"Can I defer a place in College if I defer my University place"?
In most cases, yes.
